General Motors has announced that they will be producing the all-new Chevrolet Trax compact crossover, along with a new generation of full-size pick-up trucks, at its assembly facilities in Mexico. The vehicles are the Sonic-based Trax compact utility vehicle and the next generation of the iconic Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks. In preparation for building these vehicles, GM has invested a total of $420 million into two separate facilities, which would create 1,000 new jobs. The first assembly facility, in San Luis Potosi, will be tasked with producing the Trax and received $120 million in funds. The second facility, GM’s site in Silao, will get $200 million for production of the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, which will begin next year.
The Silao, Mexico plant joins plants in Fort Wayne, Indiana; Flint, Michigan; and Arlington, Texas in producing the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks and their truck-based SUV counterparts. Chevy’s new compact crossover will go on sale at the Paris Motor Show in September before hitting the Mexican market during the fourth quarter of this year. The Trax will be built on the same platform that supports the Chevrolet Sonic and Aveo subcompact sedans. Those pickups include the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, which are due to be replaced in 2013 with a 2014-year model.
